Beginning your movie with the accurate song can pick up you off to a fine open and “Adventures in Babysitting” gives us that golden oldie “And Then He Kissed Me” as Chris Parker prepares for her sizable date with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, this clown promptly proceeds to dump our heroine, which only proves he is a fool because Chris is played by Elisabeth Shue. Those of us who remember “Call to Glory” already knew that Shue was a babe and so does Brad Anderson (Keith Coogan), the kid who is too stale for the babysitter on whom he has a mondo crush. Into the mix we add Sara Anderson (Maia Brewton), the adorable kid sister who has a thing for the Much Thor from Marvel Comics (she must have got the frigid Thor helmet from Stan Lee, Jack Kirby or somebody in the ol’ Bullpen), Daryl Coopersmith (Anthony Rapp), Brad’s best friend who has yet to learn when to shut up, and Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller), Chris’ best friend who is stuck in downtown Chicago at a bus depot without her glasses, having decided that running away from home was a abominable understanding. Unfortunately for our heroine, deciding to simply go down and occupy up Brenda proves to be a abominable thought. With the three kids in tow, Chris takes off for the mountainous city. When the site wagon gets a flat tire that is only the first in a massive chain of misfortunes that befall our intrepid lass. There will be a tow truck man with a claw, street thugs with knives on the El, gangster in a carve shop, a college frat party, a terminate encounter with the parental units at a party high at top a skyscraper, and a exquisite session of singing “The Babysitter Blues.”

In its fill draw, “Adventures in Baby Sitting is in the mold of the Indiana Jones films, where the cast of characters are stuck on a roller coaster of absorbing encounters. Our harried heroine puts up with all of this in order to keep her friend and derive the kids home before their parents collect out they have spent the night narrowly escaping death instead of being obedient at home watching the tube. Even though there is a running gag that Chris looks exactly like the Playmate of the Month, this is a movie aimed for kids in the age range of her charges. There is enough of a cartoonish element to the unpleasant guys to win the edge off of the dangers enthusiastic and of course we know from the first designate of the movie that everything will turn out okay in the waste and Chris is going to top off the evening by getting kissed by someone who might actually deserve her. Shue’s natural performance holds the film together and although she has gone on to decidedly more dramatic roles in her more current films, she evinces a natural flair for comedy in this one. However, be warned: once your kidlets have seen this 1987 Disney film they are going to be grossly disappointed in whoever you pay to glance them the next time you go out for a night of fun. Final note: Be determined to ogle the entire credits at the demolish.

Another classic 80’s comedy, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING (aka “A Night on the Town”) comes to DVD to delight dilapidated fans and novel.

When highschool senior Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) decides to use Saturday night babysitting the Anderson kids Sara (Maia Brewton) and Brad (Keith Coogan) as well as Brad’s best friend Daryl (Anthony Rapp), no one, not least Chris, will be prepared for the wild wander ahead, when Chris’ best friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) phones and begs to be rescued from the Chicago bus depot after an aborted attempt to bustle away. Chris bundles the kids in the car and heads for downtown Chicago, but after getting stranded thanks to a flat tyre, the gang slay up in a mess of exertion!

This is such a fun film. Elisabeth Shue glows as Chris and offers one of her funniest comedy performances. Whilst she is best-remembered by most film critics for her role in “Leaving Las Vegas”, to 80’s kids like me, she’ll forever be fondly regarded as Chris in AIB.

Anthony Rapp, Keith Coogan and Maia Brewton are hilarious in their roles, and Penelope Ann Miller is a yowl in the film’s clever subplot of Brenda’s adventures in the bus depot. The film also features early turns from Vincent d’Onofrio, Bradley Whitford and George Newbern.

The DVD is presented in non-anamorphic widescreen, with no extras whatsoever, but fans will unprejudiced be overjoyed to finally have this 80’s gem on DVD. A bargain designate too.

Hard to beget that Miramax Entertainment could mess up this DVD so horribly. An anniversary release of one of the most essential films of the 20th century no less. Shame on them.

There are a lot of raves here about the fact that the film is being presented “letterboxed” for the first time. Actually, it’s fair the first time the top and bottom of the record have been chopped off for no reason! “A Hard Day’s Night” was filmed in Academy standard 1.37:1. Slightly wider than your average TV tube, but not anything halt to the 1.66:1 nick job on the original DVD. Full-frame would have been the valid presentation.

As for the audio…they DID orderly up the dialog portions of the movie, so for perhaps the first time EVER, you can actually HEAR what everyone is saying - and it no longer sounds like they are speaking into an Edison cylinder recorder.

But oh, the music. They replaced the novel mono soundtrack with the standard mono AHDN CD to replace the overmodulated music on the fresh film. Never mind that there were a couple of different mixes in there that they should have left alone (”Hiss Me Why”, “And I Esteem Her”, “If I Fell”) - BUT…they went and added microdelay and phasing to fabricate some kind of a half-assed 5.1 mix that through a standard stereo or mono downmixed output makes the audio sound phase-y and hollow. This is worse than the modern mono mix (available on the modern Beta & VHS release from 1982 or the print aired on AMC several years ago) and the fact that the standard mono mix was NOT made available as alternate audio on the disc (as it was on the “Yellow Submarine” DVD) is an oversight punishable by public stoning.

As for all the bonus material…not ONE interview with an staunch Beatle? Not even McCartney? The closest we gather is George Martin?

The person tedious this mess is none other than Martin Lewis, self-proclaimed Beatle “expert” and all around media whore. Lewis’ involvement explains why no-one at Apple would have anything to do with the project. With some two-hours of useless interviews as “bonus” material, here’s what you DON’T get:

What makes this all the worse is that the image looks terrific. However, it’s been so horribly trashed that the only good set for this DVD is the trash can or as a trade in at the conventional DVD store.

Anyone who owns the new MPI DVD should believe on to it and achieve thier tewnty bucks.

Being a stout Beatle fan, and a enormous fan of this movie, I highly anticipated the arrival of this title on DVD. The sound on this DVD is dreadful, there is absolutely no dynamic range. The volume level seems to sail at the same level through out the film, there is no disagreement in volume between the scenes when there is a collected conversation and the scenes where the band is playing. I also fill the title on laserdisc and let me whine you, the laserdisc has at least 30 db of dynamic range. While watching this film on laserdisc, you can adjust the level of playback so that the scenes where there is conversation is a comfortable 75 db, and when the band plays it jumps up to an ear thumping 105 db or more. This DVD lacks ooph, the band sounds like their playing in a box. This film deserves a better sound treatment, I highly recommend boycotting the DVD and lets wait till they release it in it’s safe situation.

4:3 ratio screen is very good transfer. However, wide-screen isn’t really wide screen. it’s a 4:3 screen chopped off from top and bottom. in other word, instead of having a whole theatrical picture, what you get is picture that’s been chopped up both vertical and horizontally. what we are seeing is only 1/3 of what’s filmed, which is even smaller than 4:3. somebody cheated big time from paramount. setup menu is false leading. I want to see entire wing span on F-14! It does make huge difference on impact in fighting scene. movie this good must be done right. and while at it, make it a anamorphic enhanced.

“Top Gun” is the mach ten 80s mega hit that set theatre attendance on fire and established producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actor Tom Cruise as two of Hollywood’s king size titans, behind and in front of the camera. All about a military flight school run for `the best of the best,’ the film stars Cruise as Lt. Pete Maverick Mitchell. Pete’s too sexy for his leather bomber jacket and he knows it. He’s also short on pleasantries when it comes to wooing the femme fatale of the friendly skies, Charlotte `Charlie’ Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). But high flying maneuvers between Pete and Charlie quickly move from the school room to the bedroom. Then tragedy strikes and Pete has to pull it together to prove himself as the hero of the hour. Val Kilmer costars as Pete’s annoying and priggish rival for the top honors; Tom `Iceman’ Kazanski. The cast also includes Tom Skeritt, Michael Ironside and Anthony Edwards.

What sets “Top Gun” apart from similar military film fare of the 80s is its ability to combine a sense of the miraculous within the gritty world of tougher than tough obstacles. The dog fight footage is thrilling and the plot moves effortlessly from drama, to melodrama, to action/adventure yarn on testosterone overdrive. There’s even a shirtless eye candy volleyball tournament thrown in, with the guys doing their machismo best to ignite interest in the female population. However, the soundtrack album, which fueled the film’s high octane performance at the box office, now seems to have dated at twice the rate of any other from the 80s - save `Dirty Dancing.’ Kenny Loggins’ `Playin’ With The Boys’ and Tina Marie’s `Lead Me On’ have that faint tinny echo of a forgotten pop culture where hoop earrings and big hair were synonymous with wacky-tacky red carpet glamour. Berlin’s `Take My Breath Away’ does anything but.

After the disastrous effort put forth on Paramount’s `Footloose’ special editon, I didn’t hold out much hope for this transfer either. However, “Top Gun’s” anamorphically enhanced transfer is remarkably clean and solid. Color saturation is very nicely rendered with velvety blacks and very pristine whites. Occasionally one will note a slight hint of film grain. There are no digital anomalies (edge enhancement, pixelization, shimmering of fine details) for a smooth video presentation that is sure to please. The audio has been remixed but continues to exhibit that dated 80s quality that is best left to nostalgia for a time when sound wasn’t quite so integral to one’s overall appreciation of movie culture. Extras include an audio commentary that is adequate at best. There’s also a 6 part documentary that really should have been played as one big one, four music videos which will confound people as to why MTV became so big, and some storyboards, production materials and vintage featurettes. So set your DVD player to `cruise’ control and get ready to set off for the wild blue yonder. “Top Gun” is a blast!

I saw this film in the theater when it was originally released in 1983 and it has been one of my favorites ever since. What is amazing is that it bombed at the box office and was panned by the critics. This movie is hilarious, and has to be seen in the Monty Python frame of mind. Chapman is priceless, Madeline Kahn is unforgettable, John Cleese is brilliant, Cheech and Chong are hilarious, and Marty Feldman is a comic genius. I have friends over every year to see this film and it’s become a “Rocky Horror Picture show” type of event complete with costumes, antics, quote contests, and other silliness. It is a shame this isn’t available on DVD. Most of the VHS versions were poor quality, and my copy is certainly on its last legs. If you enjoy Monty Python, this definitely belongs in your collection while it’s still somewhat available.

This movie is far under-rated in the realm of the Python movies. Seems to me it didn’t get enough PR or something because as a comedy film alone it is hilarious. It stars Graham Chapman (Yellowbead a crude, nasty, out of touch, murderous pirate that kills anyone that gets in the way of his killing anyone), John Cleese (Blind Pew who has the most acute hearing in the world), Eric Idle, Marty Feldman, Cheech and Chong (Spanish morons), Madeline Kahn (the unfaithful Mrs. Yellowbeard), Peter Boyle (Yellowbeard’s adversary and former ship-mate, Moon), and James Mason (a cruely funny, overly sadastic, extreme Mutiny on the Bounty captain type). It is set in the year 1707 and starts out with Yellowbeard nearing his release after 15 years in an English prison, and of course everyone wants to know where Yellowbeard hid his pirate treasure. Yellowbeard escapes the prison after his sentence is unfairly increased (to get him angry enough to escape on purpose) just before his parole and the rest movie is based on his attempt to avoid beng imprisoned again while being chased by the limp-wristed British authorities and going on a funny non-sensical killing, raping (because he likes rape) and pilliging rampage tryng to recover the treasure he hid so long ago. Of course the British authorities and Moon are after the treasure too :) This is a classic and should have been released on DVD a long time ago. This is Python stuff at it’s best with the nastiest Python humor anywhere! Someone please pick up on it and make a DVD of it soon as I have only used rental resale VHS version (accch!) copy of it and would love to see it as it was meant to be seen- clearly and with good THX sound.

In 1933, legendary motorcyle rider and injurious country driver Erwin G. “Cannonball” Baker crossed the United States from skim to glide in approximately 54 hours driving a Graham-Page Model 57 Blue Flow 8…an wonderful feat of driving. Nearly, 40 years later in the early 1970’s, “Car & Driver” magazine editor Brock Yates started the “Cannonball Baker Sea to Shiny Sea Memorial Trophy Waddle” in his honor. These events were the inspiration for a slew of films including the highly exquisite, “The Gumball Rally”, (released in 1976) and the bigger budgeted, but putrid production, “The Cannonball Bustle” (released in 1981) . Both were both primarily action oriented “car mosey”comedies, however “Gumball” underplays it’s humour with a lesser known cast, thus delivering an overall better film than the Hal Needham directed “Cannonball Accelerate” By far and away “The Gumball Rally”, is one of the best car fling films ever made with a jaw dropping collection of performance automobiles from all around the world. Apart from the satisfactory line up of cars, a fun and breezy cast really enjoy the glorious balance between the novel cars and the actors.

The opening sequence with the come deserted early morning streets of Unique York awoken by the order of finely tuned engines is vivid…., as is the final showdown as the racers advance the Queen Mary in Los Angeles.

Lead actor’s Raul Julia (driving the Ferrari with Tim McIntire) & Michael Sarrazin (driving the Shelby Cobra with Nicholas Pryor) shine in this humorous escapade and character actor Norman Burton is incredible as the bumbling cop, Lieutenant Roscoe trying to halt the immoral country madness.

( Tragically, actor Tim McIntire died at age 42 from heart failure, possibly brought about by his alleged drug/alcohol addiction. Steven Keats (Kandinsky) died from an apparent suicide at age 49, and Normann Burton died in a car accident broken-down 80! )

It’s expansive to finally have “The Gumball Rally” officially released on DVD, however it’s fairly dissapointing that the disc has “zero” in the arrangement of extras. Would have been nice to have some commentary from cast or crew, or some tedious the scenes on the making of the film.

So buckle up your seat belts, inaugurate your engines, and hang on and appreciate pure petroleum based entertainment…….And remember the first rule of Italian driving…” What’s a-behind me is not critical “.

Of the “let’s atomize the law and have some fun while we do it” genre, this is one of the best. The writing, the acting and the production was witty, comical, and composed holds up nearly 30 years later.

So where, oh where, oh WHERE, is the DVD? Another reviewer said it for all of us when he quoted Raul Julia’s character-defining line from the early section of the film: “What is unhurried me…is not considerable.” And so it goes with VHS…over, gradual us, ruin of narrative…Bring ON the DVD!

One of the best of Hitchcock (although as far as his films go, Hitch probably has the best track report of any director living or humdrum) . This film is basically the unique “Fugitive” and follows elegant closely the status to his “The 39 Steps” from 1935 - a man is incorrect for a CIA agent and is caught in a “deadly game of cat and mouse,” as it were. I Savor the music and the visuals that commence out the film - it makes me wish I had been alive to explore it in a movie theater in the 50’s. And although this film is over 2 hours long, there’s no arrangement you can be bored - the suspense is so intense you’ll be chewing your nails the whole time (I did the first time I saw it) . Cary Grant is good as always, James Mason plays one of the most cross of Hitchcock’s villains (I would Savor to have this guy’s assure) and Eva Marie Saint looks heavenly and plays her fragment well. I also enjoyed seeing Martin Landau in an early role as one of James Mason’s henchmen and Jessie Royce Landis (the mother from “To Earn a Thief”) as Grant’s mother (although both were very reach the same age at the time) . And I care for any film gather by Bernard Herrmann - this guy should have had a mantle covered with awards, but as luck would have it, most of his scores went not only un-awarded but un-nominated (as this one did) . By all means, if you don’t acquire it, acquire it up today - and by the contrivance, friendly job for FINALLY releasing it on DVD, MGM.

With this film, Alfred Hitchcock site out to top himself and fetch befriend on top after the failure of VERTIGO; he did honest that. NORTH BY NORTHWEST is automatically a classic with the acting by Cary Grant (his fourth and final film with Hitchcock), Eva Maria Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll (another one of Hithcock’s favorites), and young Martin Landau (in his film debut), the fantastic location pieces (the UN cancel, the cropduster sequence, and the climax atop Mt. Rushmore), Bernard Hermann’s music secure, and the classic work of the camera by the Master of Suspense. But this DVD’s extras really add to the film. It includes a documentary hosted by Saint (”Destination Hitchcock,” not “The Man in Lincoln’s Nose” as listed on this space), an audio commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman, two theatrical trailers (a standard trailer and one featuring Hitchcock), a TV Region, an isolated music audio track and the film itself remastered in Dolby 5.1 Audio and 1.66:1 widescreen anamorphic format. The only predicament is it comes in a snap case like all Warners DVDs, not allowing a booklet with production notes. But this DVD is a must remove, especially if you’re a fan of Hitch. It’s also a stamp of interest for 007 fans (like myself) . This film brought about behold thrillers and you should compare the cropduster sequence in this film to the helicopter sequence in FROM RUSSIA WITH Treasure.

Triumph of the Nerds is composed one of the best public level documentaries about the origins and development of personal computers from their beginnings in the mid-70’s on through the IBM/Apple years and into the mid-90’s with the originate of Windows 95. It is dated somewhat, especially at the ruin with the forecasts about the future growth of the internet and what it would mean to PC and Mac development and the world. Nothing was truer then than remains today, predicting the long-term future of the computer and internet industry is simply impossible.

What troubles me with this edition by Ambrose is that they have apparently sacrificed bits and pieces here and there for some unfathomable reason. The main points are all detached there, but some of the side stories and flavors have been crop. Examples include Steve Wozniak’s description of his early interest in electronics in finding an broken-down AT&T phone company manual to learn to hack into the phone system to call the Pope. It cuts Steve Jobs’ description of his early experiences with Bill Gates, saying that the modern version of Word was “unbiased dreadful but they kept at it…”, and someone whose name I can’t remember describing the early mainframes and trying to consume one as “you were lucky if your entire city had one mainframe, and, if your company had it, there would only be one.” These are the ones I noticed apt off, I’m clear there are others and they are minor things, but it’s troubling that a company buys the rights to a demonstrate and edits it for whatever reason rather than simply giving us the whole deal.

And we have THEM to thank for all of this.

Your humble author can’t serve but wonder how Bob Cringely got the likes of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, Paul Allen and others in front of the cameras for an objective explore inside the slightly curved minds that begat the personal computer.

At 3 hours in length, “Triumph of the Nerds” isn’t unprejudiced a PBS miniseries. On home video, it becomes an sage. And why shouldn’t it be? The personal computer has an impact on our lives equal to that of the light bulb and the automobile. But in the case of the PC, most of the people responsible for its creation and worldwide influence are peaceful alive. These are flesh and blood humans, not fading historical sketches like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.

“Triumph of the Nerds” was originally produced as a 20-year retrospective on the personal computer. But the PC will be 25 years outmoded in the year 2000. I can’t wait to glimpse Bob Cringely’s follow up.

It is rare that a fresh can successfully be adapted to the cover without losing great of its force. Lady Chatterley, Ken Russell’s adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, however, loses almost none of the force of the novel source. The original was banned when it came out, and one viewing of Lady Chatterley will elaborate why.

The British VHS box for Lady Chatterley boasts that it is filled with “very, very erotic sex.” That is about the most apt statement you can invent about this movie. Lest one fetch the unpleasant conception, however, this made-for-TV movie is not pornography. It utilizes the novel location, cutting out some of the more social aspects of the unique, to bellow a fair legend about one woman’s search for treasure — sexual and otherwise — outside of her marriage and class.

Joely Richardson, best known in the U.S. for cavorting with Mel Gibson in “The Patriot,” here bares it all early and often with Sean Bean. Both of them shine in their respective roles. Ms. Richardson is sparkling as a strong, independent woman whose husband is crippled during WWI, thus basically ending her sexual life prematurely. Sean Bean plays her lowly, gamekeeper lover, Oliver Mellors. The dirty, scruffy, growling Mellors is the perfect vehicle for Sean Bean’s talent — fraction abominable guy, share sensual lover, in many ways a guilty pleasure (considerable like Sean Bean himself!)

This is not a movie for immature audiences — it is as comely a sage as it is erotic, powerful the arrangement D. H. Lawrence wrote it. Nor is it for the faint of heart — the sex scenes are revealing and very intense. It is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and overall, is an unbelievable cinematic experience. The 3.5 hours are well worth watching, at least for fans of Joely Richardson or Sean Bean.

Although the movie is extremely gracious, I would definitely recommend reading the new current as well, particularly the unexpurgated version. Some of the best scenes in the recent were slash for censorship considerations and their inability to work onscreen. Nonetheless, fans of the recent will not be disappointed — and those unacquainted with the original will certainly be more than a puny surprised at the force and eroticism of this movie.

Now available in a DVD format, Lady Chatterley is the dramatic and passionate BBC miniseries directed by Ken Russell and based upon the D.H. Lawrence unique “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” which gave rise to what was perhaps the most distinguished obscenity trial of the 20th Century and continues to appear on various banned books lists for it subject matter. It’s the tale of a young and sexually repressed woman of the British upper class who is unhappily married to a troubled husband. She encounters a gamekeeper on her estates whose sinful attentions awaken her senses. This BBC production is technically flawless and hallmarked with gorgeous outdoor scenes, authentically detailed indoor sets, lustrous acting, and outstanding direction. Available in VHS (11457, $29.95), Lady Chatterley has a running time of 205 minutes.

Manga has spent very diminutive peril to bring this classic anime to your PSP. The only audio track is the English dub, so therefore there are no subtitles. Worse yet, the movie is presented in a widescreen format — the fresh movie was not widescreen, so presentation in this format objective cuts off the top and bottom of the scene.

Image quality is soft, and looks to be a straight conversion from the poorly done DVD Manga brought out a few years ago.

CLASSIC.

If you didn’t know about it you are probably dissapointed with all of the anime you’ve seen,with the exception of the Basilisk series.
